M-22 IS AN ICONIC HIGHWAY which was formed in 1919 from a collection of short road sections that became connected under the state highway department.
The scenic M-22 starts in Manistee, heads north to Frankfort, and meanders up the shoreline of Lake Michigan winding through Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Park. It continues heading north around Northport and then heads south ending in Traverse City.
The debate among locals is whether there might be one or two traffic lights along the 116-mile highway.
