M-22 IS AN ICONIC HIGHWAY which was organized in 1919 from a collection of shorter road sections that finally became connected under the authority of the state's transportation department.
The scenic M-22 starts in Manistee and heads north to Frankfort where it meanders up the shoreline of Lake Michigan. It continues heading north to Northport and then loops south, ending in Traverse City. The 116 mile highway traverses in and around the "little finger" in the lower mitt.
The debate among locals is whether there are one or two traffic lights along the M-22 highway.
