HISTORY

M-22 IS AN ICONIC HIGHWAY which was formed in 1919 arising from a series of hard packed roadways. Over its one hundred years of existence many tourist associations formed each trying to extol the virtues of the region, welcoming visitors off the beaten path.

The scenic M-22 starts in Manistee heads north to Frankfort and meanders up the shoreline of Lake Michigan winding through Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore Park. It continues heading north around Northport and then heads south ending in Traverse City.

The debate among locals is whether there are one or two traffic lights along the 116-mile highway.
