Six Favorite Courses Along M 22 That Won’t Cost You an Arm and a Leg

Frankfort, MI If you haven’t ventured out for a while it is time to grab some friends and come play one of the M22 Golf Trail picturesque and challenging courses. This isn’t about discounts. It is about playing the planet’s greatest game at far lower rates than were posted in the 1990s when golf prices and popularity hit their highs. In vogue today are nine-hole rounds and twilight deals for the busiest and frugal amongst us. These are my favorites that are a pleasant drive along the 116-mile M-22 Scenic Highway that traverses through NW Michigan.
Manistee Golf & Country Club This has several holes along the bluffs of Lake Michigan and boasts some real pedigree in its over one-hundred years. The public is welcome. Check out their twilight and sunset rates - a real deal. Food in the clubhouse is being praised for its creative fare.
Bear Lake Highlands The local Ottawa Indians purchased the course last year and expectations are high with their support and attention to this venerable, old-fashioned, gem. It is located one mile south of Bear Lake on US 31.
Champion Hill A Scottish link-style course with some of the best par four holes in northern Michigan. A Cole and Stone design. Its sculpted from 350 acres of hilly terrain yielding panoramic views of both Lake Michigan and the gorgeous countryside of Benzie county. A must play Fall experience. The colors are incredible.
Manitou Passage Beautiful clubhouse and challenging elevations greet the serious player in this Arnold Palmer creation. It runs along the western M-22 and offers well bunkered and manicured greens.
Northport Creek Golf Course This is a newer Jerry Matthews creation located one mile north of the village of Northport. An impressive nine-hole layout that has caught the attention of players in northern Leelanau county. A most relaxing atmosphere greets you along with their impressive investment in solar power generation.
Bahle Farms A wonderful golf course that sprang from the family cherry orchards in this Suttons Bay property. The elevations overlooking the landscape delivers some of the best views and delivers dramatic shot making along the M22 Golf Trail in the middle of Leelanau County.
